Biography

Jeffrey Axelbank, Psy. D.

Jeffrey Axelbank, Psy.D. is a psychologist working for over 30 years in both organizational consulting and clinical roles. As a therapist, Jeff specializes in Group Therapy and treating people with chronic pain and other mind-body conditions through his Health Coaching practice.  He also has extensive experience working with survivors of childhood relational trauma and dissociative disorders.  Spurred by his own recent experience, as reported in the NY Times, Jeff also offers support groups for people who have experienced the loss of their therapist.  Other therapists turn to Jeff for supervision and consultation, and he offers a consultation group for therapists treating chronic pain and other neuroplastic symptoms.

Jeff’s warm and engaging style helps clients feel safe and comfortable, and able to open up and discuss difficult issues.  Working primarily from a psychodynamic framework, he also integrates elements of other modalities when they might be helpful.

Following his undergraduate education in Electrical Engineering at Cornell University, Jeff worked as an Electronic Design Engineer before transitioning to his psychology career. He earned a doctorate at the Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, and earned a certificate in Organizational Development and Consultation in the Organization Program at the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and Psychology.  As a psychologist, Jeff has been active in professional advocacy, fighting for the rights of people seeking mental health services. For this work, he was named Psychologist of the Year in 2011 by the New Jersey Psychological Association (NJPA). In addition, he was awarded the prestigious Peterson Prize in 2013 by the Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology for “outstanding contributions to professional psychology.”

In his spare time, Jeff is an avid skier, cyclist, and rock musician.
